Transient global amnesia, is it really global? The role of hippocampus on declarative memory. Case report
Keywords:
Hippocampus, declarative memory, episodic memory, transient global amnesia, cerebrovascular diseaseAbstract
It is known as far that memory processes are involved in the medial aspect structures of tem-
poral lobe, in particular at the hippocampus. Encoding, storage and consolidation processes
join the so-called declarative memory. Role of hippocampus has been well addressed by a
variety of reports of memory impairment after brain injury. The transient global amnesia (TGA)
syndrome was described over 50 years ago, consisting in sudden but reversible impairment of
declarative memory, in the absence of other cognitive or neurological symptoms. Damage has
been documented in some cases either by ischemia or other causes. Present case enhances to
disclose the nature of memory damage after hippocampal infarction, selective to declarative
memory rather than global memory disorder in TGA.
