Abstract

Osteoarticular tuberculosis is a rare but potentially serious cause of joint destruction. In the knee, infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis can cause bone cavitation and progressive structural damage, leaving significant mechanical sequelae even after the infectious process has resolved. We present the case of a patient with a history of previously treated bone tuberculosis of the knee who developed advanced gonarthrosis and was treated with cemented total knee arthroplasty. We review the diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic aspects, highlighting considerations regarding the appropriate timing for surgery and the available evidence regarding the use or non-use of antituberculosis therapy in the postoperative period.
