Viability of the acetabular roof in developmental dysplasia of the hip (dislocated) affected by mycoplasmas. Study with early termination

Objective: Investigate chondral tissue viability invaded by mycoplasma in hip developmental
dysplasia and dislocation. Materials and methods: A triple-blind cohort study of 15 infants,
aged 12 through 36 months, was scheduled to examinate samples of tissue obtained at the
time of the hip reduction surgery, from the anterior wall of acetabulum and from the hip joint
capsule, to perform on electron microscopy, tissue culture and mycoplasmas culture. Results
of each lab were unknown for the others. Results: Only five cases were examined. The early
first three were positive for mycoplasmas, case one by electron microscopy at cartilage and
capsule and two more cases by culture for mycoplasmas. Late reported cases two to five
were also positive by electron microscopy in acetabular cartilage. At the end, all five studied
cases were positive by one test or another. Conclusion: Our former main objective was not
accomplished as a result of interruption in advance, which was carried out to avoid introduc-
tion of mycoplasmas into the tissue lab. However, findings are consistent to the presence of
mycoplasmas in the structures of congenital hips.
