Abstract

This paper deals with such epidemiologic factors as age, gender, injury mechanism and topo-
graphic distribution of fractures in adult patients who had any kind of fracture, treated at our

institution. Patients and methods: This is a cross-sectional study of cases older than 17 years
who were admitted at our rehabilitation department after being treated of fractures throughout
the body skeleton. Results: Universe consisted of 717 patients, aged in average 50.3 years.
More frequent fractures were at proximal femur, ankle region and distal radius. Men are prone

to undergo a fracture at an earlier age than women as follows: men sustained a fracture be-
tween 17 and 49 years (OR 2.9, CI 95%, 1.6-3.8) while women had it as a rule after 50 years

(OR 1.6, CI 95%, 1.3-2.7) p < 0.001. More frequent fractures in the elderly were at hip and
distal radius, while in younger patients it was at the ankle region. Global more frequent trauma
mechanism was almost always a fall. Conclusion: Young men and older women should be
focused in prevention of the usual fractures which they are prone to.
