Abstract

Nanotechnology has changed the functional perspective of the materials used in medicine,

providing a better functionality mainly due to its nanometric size. An example are silver nanopar-
ticles that exhibit different properties once they are applied to biological systems compared

with traditional systems of treatment. The nanoscale gives them the ability to penetrate different
biological membranes, such as bacterial cell wall thereby increasing their bactericidal effect.
The purpose of this review is to address the processes used for obtaining silver nanoparticles,
as an example of the technology used in the design of these vehicles, the quality parameters
applied to protect its functionality and an explanation of its mechanism of antibacterial action
for an effective therapeutic evaluation and as a reference point of impact of the development
of materials through nanotechnology.
