Abstract

In science, when we talk about a stem cell we refer to a cell with the capacity of self-renew

and at the same time differentiate in at least one other distinct cell type. Such cells are clas-
sified as totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent or unipotent according to their differentiation

potential. Here we discuss briefly about the characteristics of stem cells and their prospective
medical importance.
