Executive functions in children with ADHD according to clinical subtype and control group

The attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is one of the major aliments in childhood,
persisting into adolescence and even adulthood. The WISC-R scale contributes to the knowledge of
neuropsychological dimensions that represent strong and weak aspects in the child, with potential
implications for clinical and educational interventions. Objective: The present study evaluates the
executive functions in children with ADHD according to the clinical subtype. Method: Ninety-
three children aged 7 to 12 years were studied (73% boys and 27% girls). For the evaluation of
the executive functions, the WISC-R test was applied to classify the children with ADHD into
three subtypes. The DSM-IV-TR questionnaires were applied to parents and teachers. Results:
In the executive functions, we found a lower score in the ADHD group in the subtests of picture
concepts (F = 3.76, gl 3.57, p = 0.01), block design (F = 4.55, gl 3.57, p < 0.01), and picture
completion (F = 4.52, gl 3.57, p < 0.01). The Tukey post hoc analysis showed that differences
were found in TDA-1 in picture concepts; TDA-C in block design and TDA-C and TDA-H in the
picture completion subtests. To classify children into subtypes of ADHD, the coincidence of the
DSM-IV questionnaires between parents and teachers was necessary.
