Abstract

Purpose: To determine the frequency of primary open-angle glaucoma in adults in the Insti-
tuto Nacional de Rehabilitación, México, D.F. Methods: A transverse and retrospective trial

by revision of the records of 1,020 patients with glaucoma from the Ophthalmology Depart-
ment at the Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitación (INR) by the cross-sectional procedure. All

patients over 40 years who had been diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG)

were selected at the outpatient care dept. Information was obtained through the automated
hospital information system (AHIS). Obtained data were: visual acuity, intraocular pressure of
both eyes, biomicroscopy, gonioscopy, fundoscopy and the diagnostic of glaucoma. Data base
was processed by SPSS V20. Results: Out of the 1,020 individuals examined, there were 341
men (33.4 %) and 679 women (66.6 %). The mean age of patients was 70.67 ± 11.16 years
(range, 40 to 98). Rate of population from Mexico City was 69.7%. Patients clinically diagnosed
of POAG were 548 (53.7%), followed by glaucoma suspect (26.2 %), primary closed angle
glaucoma (6.5%), neovascular glaucoma and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma were 3.9 and 3.6%
respectively. Other glaucomas were 4.5%. The frequency of POAG in this study was 2.55%.
Conclusions: These results display the need of carrying out multicenter studies of POAG to
establish with certainty the regional and national prevalence; as well as designing preventive
strategies for early diagnosis and to increase health care coverage to this health problem.
