Assessment of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in adult burn patients

Abstract

Successful procedures are required in order to confront the challenges presented by patients
who have severe burn injuries. The results of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation were
compared to those of conventional mechanical ventilation. In preparation for the study, a
progressive stairway was undertaken as follows: 1) a systematic review, 2) the construction of
a qualitative argument by means of field research through a questionnaire on the use of both

techniques, and 3) replication of acute respiratory distress by a ventilation simulator for com-
parison of both techniques. Results of the systematic review demonstrated a mild tendency

to better results with high-frequency oscillatory ventilation since it improves the oxygenation
index and protects the lung from suffering a barotrauma or atelectrauma. This was confirmed
through the characterization of the acute respiratory distress syndrome in the in vitro study.

The fieldwork showed that until the year 2009, high-frequency oscillatory ventilation equip-
ments for the treatment of burn patients did not exist in Mexico. This favors the development

of new lines of research on ventilation for these individuals.
