Abstract

Immunological techniques that use antibodies have been widely used since their appearance a few decades ago. Currently, these are elementary tools not only for basic and clinical research, but also for the diagnosis of many diseases. This is due to its specificity and reproducibility given by the antigen- antibody interaction, which allows the identification of various small and large molecules, many of them proteins. Immunofluorescence staining (IF) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques are part of these important techniques, so understanding their types or variants that exist and the differences between these techniques is essential to use them properly and get the most out of each of them. These techniques, together with protein electrophoresis, allow us to identify different proteins in a single sample, their location in a tissue, their presence or absence and also their low or high abundance in a tissue or group of cells. Here we will review general steps of these techniques, their applications and the technical details to consider if we are going to start working with them.
