Abstract

Chronic otitis media is an inflammatory/infectious disease caused by dysfunction on the Eustachian tube or bye the presence of a cholesteatoma. The organisms involved in this disease generally are bacteria, like Pseudomonas, E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus and anaerobes. In some cases, when the patient has been in a chronic treatment with topic antibiotics, it has been reported infections by fungi, like Aspergillus y Candida. But there are no reported cases of Cryptococcus neoformans. This fungi causes meningitis and meningoencephalitis. This article reports a case of chronic otitis media caused by cryptococcus neoformans in an immunocompetent patient, and since there is no reports in literature on how to manage this disease, we based our treatment on chronic otitis media caused by other fungi.
